Overview
About the CT scan
A CT (Computed Tomography) scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles into detailed cross-sectional “slices” of the body. It is fast and excellent in emergencies and for imaging the chest, abdomen, bones and blood vessels, often with a contrast dye for sharper detail.
Commonly used for
Head & brain (stroke, trauma)
Chest & lungs
Abdomen & pelvis
Bones & complex fractures
CT angiography (vessels)
Cancer staging & follow-up
How to prepare
1If contrast is planned, fast for 4–6 hours (water is allowed).
2Tell us about allergies, kidney problems, diabetes medication or pregnancy.
3Remove metal objects from the area being scanned.
4Carry prior scans and your prescription.
What to expect
1You lie on a table that passes through a ring-shaped scanner.
2If used, contrast is given through a vein — a warm sensation is normal.
3You may be asked to hold your breath briefly.
4The scan is quick — often under 15 minutes; reports are usually ready in 2–3 hours.
